Despite rising divorce statistics, being part of a supportive couple whether for life or not is one of life’s greatest gifts and pleasures. Couples who support each other through thick and thin often make it to the finish line!

As we humans continue learning to take better care of our health, we are definitely reversing and diminishing the signs of aging. Thanks also to the prevalence and mainstream acceptability of plastic and cosmetic surgery, we are culturally becoming attuned to looking our youthful best at every age. An expression like “60 is the new 40” doesn’t come about without good reason.

With this greater acceptance, a new trend is emerging among couples. More and more couples are supporting each other and deepening their bonds through elective cosmetic surgery. Sure, travel, fine dining, antiquing, hiking and a commitment to fitness still have their place as bonding activities. But couples plastic surgery is definitely on the rise.

It’s becoming more and more common for couples to schedule cosmetic procedures together or sequentially if there will be caretaking required and fairly lengthy recovery times. Some of the more popular procedures couples are scheduling together are fat grafting for facial rejuvenation and facial contouring. Often a couple will schedule these procedures right before they retire which launches them into a new chapter in their lives feeling vibrant and looking youthful.

Another popular procedure for younger couples is body sculpting and contouring. This is often the choice of couples who have finished having children.

As a plastic surgeon I applaud this activity for couples choosing to move through life looking and feeling their best. What we surgeons must be alert to though is whether one of the partners is pressuring the other to have a procedure or that both parties are equally excited, because it’s never good to have surgery for someone else. However, choosing to grow older together and look better at every turn is a great way to go through life as a couple.
