While there are many wonderful traits we might inherit from our families, we’re not typically thrilled when a double chin has been passed down through the generations. Fat deposits can develop under the chin due to heredity, the aging process or weight gain, with this area being highly resistant to dieting and exercise. We may lose confidence in our appearance, and feel a deep sense of frustration when we see a double chin lurking in photographs or in the mirror. Kybella is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called a double chin. It is a safe, effective and non-surgical treatment that beautifully restores a slim, shapely neck and lower jaw.

Advantages of Kybella Treatment:

  • Non-surgical and non-invasive
  • Short treatment time, typically over your lunch break
  • No downtime or discomfort
  • No anesthesia
  • Effective where diet and exercise have failed
  • Achieves a better fit in collars and clothing
  • Boosts self-confidence and self-image
  • Long-lasting, permanent results

Dr. Gardenier can create a comprehensive combination procedure to help reduce both sagging, drooping skin and excess fat. It’s good to note that combining treatments can often lead to less downtime and lower costs.

The active ingredient in our Kybella in Portland Maine injection is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. You and your doctor will decide how many treatments you need. Once the desired aesthetic response is achieved with Kybella, retreatment is not expected. While Kybella is highly effective at reducing the fat under the chin, it cannot address issues of skin laxity, which may best be treated with laser therapy.

Before receiving Kybella, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you: have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin; have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck or chin; have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have trouble swallowing; have bleeding problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if Kybella will harm your unborn baby); are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if Kybella passes into your breast milk; talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby if you receive Kybella).

The first step in determining if Kybella is a good fit for your aesthetic goals is to schedule your confidential consultation with Dr. Gardenier in the privacy and comfort of the Portland, Maine offices. During this initial visit, the doctors will examine your double chin, take photographs, review your medical history and inquire about previous cosmetic treatments. They will also take the time to answer all your questions and concerns in detail, including those regarding financing and insurance; risks and benefits; downtime and recovery; and of course, what kind of results you can expect. Browsing through our before and after photographs is an excellent resource for you as you begin your journey with Kybella. You will be able to view a variety of clients and their outcomes, and you will be able to ask Dr. Gardenier specific questions about what you see. If you are interested in any other cosmetic treatments, such as our BOTOX in Portland Maine treatments, skin tightening or eyelash augmentation, the consultation is a great time to discuss these additional procedures with the doctors, as they have the ability to create a customized package to meet all your cosmetic needs.
